Patchwork – A Clever Two-Player Quilt-Building Board Game

Create the most beautiful and valuable quilt in Patchwork, the acclaimed two-player strategy game designed by Uwe Rosenberg and published by Lookout Games.

Choose colourful fabric patches, spend your buttons wisely and fit oddly shaped pieces together on your personal quilt board. Every patch costs both buttons and time, so the best choice isn't always the biggest or most attractive one.

Easy to learn but surprisingly deep, Patchwork combines tile placement, spatial puzzle-solving and tactical resource management in a quick game that takes around 30 minutes.

For 2 players, ages 8+, Patchwork is an excellent choice for couples, friends, families and anyone looking for a thoughtful head-to-head board game.

What Is Patchwork?

Patchwork is a competitive tile-placement game where two players race to create the best quilt.

Each player has their own 9×9 quilt board and a supply of buttons, which act as both currency and part of your final score. In the centre of the table is a selection of differently shaped fabric patches.

The clever twist is that patches don't just have a button cost — they also have a time cost. Taking one patch moves your time token forward, and the player furthest behind on the time track gets to take the next turn.

This creates a fascinating balance between choosing the right patch, spending your resources and controlling the pace of the game.

How to Play

At the beginning of the game, the patches are arranged around the central time board.

On your turn, you can choose one of the three available patches immediately clockwise from the neutral marker.

When you select a patch, you:

  1. Pay its button cost.

  2. Place the patch onto your quilt board.

  3. Move your time token according to the patch's time cost.

  4. Continue taking turns until the game ends.

You can also choose to advance your time token and collect buttons, giving you a way to build up your income when the available patches aren't suitable.

As the game progresses, your quilt gradually fills with colourful polyomino-shaped patches. Fitting everything together efficiently is crucial because every empty square at the end of the game costs you points.

The first player to completely fill a 7×7 area can also claim the special bonus tile, providing another reason to plan your quilt carefully.

Why You'll Love It

  • Brilliant two-player design – Built specifically for competitive head-to-head play.

  • Easy to learn – Simple rules make it accessible to new players.

  • Surprisingly strategic – Every patch involves decisions about shape, cost and timing.

  • Spatial puzzle challenge – Fit awkwardly shaped pieces into your 9×9 quilt.

  • Time is a resource – The time track determines turn order and affects your options.

  • Buttons matter – Spend them to acquire patches, but keep enough for your final score.

  • Quick playing time – Most games take around 30 minutes.

  • Beautiful table presence – The colourful quilt pieces make every game look different.

  • Excellent replayability – The available patches and decisions create a different puzzle every time.

  • Designed by Uwe Rosenberg – From the designer behind games including Agricola and A Feast for Odin.

Who Is It For?

Patchwork is ideal for players who enjoy tile-laying games, abstract strategy, puzzle games and tactical two-player games.

It's approachable enough for families and newer board gamers, while the combination of time management, button economy and spatial planning gives experienced players plenty to think about.

It's also a great choice if you're looking for a game that can be played in around half an hour without sacrificing meaningful decisions.

Build Your Quilt

Choose Your Patches

Only a limited selection of patches is available at any given moment. Choosing one means considering its shape, button cost and time cost.

Manage Your Buttons

Buttons are your main currency during the game. You'll need to balance spending them on useful patches against keeping enough to generate a strong final score.

Control the Time Track

Every patch moves your time token forward. Because the player furthest behind takes the next turn, choosing a patch with a high time cost can sometimes hand your opponent several opportunities.

Fill the Gaps

The shape of every patch matters. Leaving awkward empty spaces can make it difficult to complete your quilt efficiently, while careful placement can help you create a more valuable finished design.

Race for the Bonus

Completing a 7×7 square earns a special bonus tile worth additional points, rewarding players who plan their quilt from the beginning.

Main Mechanics

Tile Placement
Select and arrange irregularly shaped fabric patches on your personal 9×9 board.

Spatial Puzzle
Every patch needs to fit, making efficient use of space one of the game's central challenges.

Time Track
The time track controls turn order and determines how quickly each player progresses towards the end of the game.

Resource Management
Buttons are both a purchasing currency and part of your final score.

Variable Turn Order
The player furthest behind on the time track takes the next turn, creating an unusual and highly interactive rhythm.

Set Collection & Planning
Special patches and bonus opportunities reward players who think several turns ahead.
