Magical Athlete is a wonderfully chaotic racing board game for 2–6 players where anything can happen—and every racer has a completely different way of bending the rules.

At first glance, it looks simple. Choose your racers, roll the dice and race towards the finish line. But these aren't ordinary athletes. The cast includes bizarre characters with outrageous special abilities that can completely change the race.

One racer might always move a certain number of spaces. Another could jump over opponents. Someone else might send a rival backwards, swap positions with another racer or otherwise cause complete havoc on the track.

The result is a hilarious family board game where planning matters, but absolutely nothing is guaranteed.

Before the racing begins, players draft a team of four racers. Before each race, you choose which athlete from your team will compete. That means the decisions start before anyone even rolls the dice: which character is best for this race, and which of their abilities could give you the edge?

The game is played over four races, with players earning points based on their finishing positions. The player with the most points at the end wins.

With its combination of dice rolling, racing, variable player powers and ridiculous character abilities, Magical Athlete is ideal for families, casual gamers and groups looking for a fast, funny game that doesn't take itself too seriously.

If you're looking for a game where a perfectly sensible race can suddenly descend into complete chaos, Magical Athlete is exactly that.

How to Play

The fun in Magical Athlete starts before the first race.

Each player drafts a team of four different racers. Every racer has their own card and a unique ability that can dramatically change how they behave on the track.

Once everyone has assembled their team, the races begin.

Before each race, players choose one of their four racers to compete. Choosing the right athlete is part of the strategy: some powers are particularly useful in certain situations, while others can create chaos for everyone around them.

Then it's time to race.

On your turn, roll a die and move your racer that many spaces. Simple, right?

Not quite.

Your racer's special ability can completely change what happens next.

Some racers can move in unusual ways, interact with other racers or manipulate positions on the track. Other abilities can effectively break the normal rules of racing.

This means you aren't simply hoping to roll a high number. You're constantly looking for opportunities to make your racer's unique power work to your advantage.

The races alternate between the mild and wild sides of the double-sided track, adding another layer of variety to the game. A race can quickly change from a straightforward sprint into an absurd chain reaction of special abilities.

A race ends once two racers cross the finish line, with those racers generally being the ones who score points.

Then the next race begins.

Across the four races, you'll need to decide when to use your strongest racers, how to make the most of their abilities and how to cope when your opponents' characters start causing trouble.

After four races, the player with the most points wins.

The result is a game that is extremely easy to teach but produces a surprising amount of variety. Because the racers available to you and your opponents can change the way the race plays out, no two games need to feel the same.

And sometimes the best strategy is simply embracing the chaos.
