Carcassonne – Award-Winning Tile-Laying Board Game

Build medieval cities, claim roads and control the countryside! Carcassonne is a modern classic of board gaming, combining simple tile-laying rules with clever strategic decisions.

Place landscape tiles to create cities, roads, monasteries and fields, then use your meeples to claim features and score points. Easy to learn but increasingly tactical as the landscape grows, Carcassonne is an excellent family strategy board game for 2–5 players aged 7+, with games taking around 35 minutes.

What Is Carcassonne?

Carcassonne is a tile-laying strategy board game inspired by the medieval fortified city in southern France. Players work together to build the landscape, but compete to control its most valuable features.

Every tile you place expands the shared map. You can claim a city, road or monastery with a meeple, earning points when that feature is completed. Fields can also be claimed for valuable end-game points.

The clever part is deciding where to build and when to commit your limited meeples.

How to Play

On your turn, draw a landscape tile and place it so that its edges connect correctly with the existing map. Your tile may extend a road, enlarge a city or add another section of countryside.

After placing the tile, you can choose to put one of your meeples onto the newly placed feature. Meeples can become knights, thieves, monks or farmers, depending on where they're placed.

Complete a city or road to score points and retrieve your meeple for later use. Monasteries score when surrounded by eight tiles, while farmers remain in fields until the end of the game.

Every turn presents a small puzzle: score now, build for later or interfere with an opponent's plans?
