Games Used as Therapeutic Tools: Why Rolling Dice Can Change Lives

Games Used as Therapeutic Tools: Why Rolling Dice Can Change Lives

How tabletop gaming is quietly becoming one of the most accessible, judgment-free therapeutic tools for children and adults alike — and why we've built an entire non-profit around it in Cornwall.

It Started With a Simple Observation

When Matt and Dave founded Roll The Dice Cornwall back in 2024, it began as a free children's Warhammer club run out of Breaney Chapel. The goal was straightforward: give kids a place to play, build, and belong.

But something unexpected happened. Parents started telling us their children were calmer at home. Teachers noticed improved focus in class. Kids who'd struggled to make friends were suddenly talking — really talking — about their latest battle report or the army they were painting.

That's when we realised: games aren't just fun. They're therapeutic tools.

What Makes a Game Therapeutic?

Therapeutic tabletop gaming isn't about slapping a "wellness" label on a board game. It's about using structured, facilitated play to support social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) in a way that feels completely natural to the person playing.

Here's why it works:

  • Low-barrier engagement — you don't need to be "good at games" to benefit. There's no wrong way to roll a die.
  • Built-in structure — games provide clear rules, turn-taking, and predictable frameworks, which can be especially grounding for neurodivergent players.
  • Safe distance — talking about your character's feelings is often easier than talking about your own. Games create a buffer.
  • Real social practice — negotiation, teamwork, losing gracefully, celebrating others. It all happens around the table.
  • Tangible achievement — painting a model, finishing a campaign, learning a ruleset. Visible progress builds confidence.

Critical Core: The Therapeutic RPG That's Changing the Conversation

One of the most powerful tools we use is Critical Core — a research-backed, structured tabletop roleplaying game developed by the charity Game to Grow.

Unlike a standard game of Dungeons & Dragons, Critical Core is designed with explicit therapeutic aims. Trained facilitators guide small groups (usually 4–6 players) through adventures that deliberately target:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Communication and self-expression
  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Problem-solving and flexible thinking
  • Resilience and empathy
  • Executive functioning

It looks like a game. It feels like a game. But behind the dice rolls and character sheets, something deeper is happening — and we track it, review it, and adjust to meet each player where they are.

Critical Core complements, but does not replace, clinical mental health treatment. It's one tool in a wider support network — and a remarkably accessible one.

Why Tabletop Gaming Specifically?

You might wonder: why not just use video games, or sports, or art therapy?

There's room for all of those. But therapeutic tabletop gaming has some unique advantages:

  • In-person, face-to-face interaction — no screens, no avatars, real human connection.
  • Shared physical space — the table itself becomes a grounding, communal anchor.
  • Pace is player-led — a facilitator can slow down, pause, or revisit a moment as needed.
  • No performance pressure — there's no audience, no scoreboard, no "failing" in front of peers.
  • Infinite adaptability — the story, difficulty, and content can be tailored to the group's needs in real time.

For children with ADHD, autism, anxiety, or those struggling with mainstream education, this kind of flexible, judgment-free environment can be genuinely transformative.

What This Looks Like at Roll The Dice

We're not a clinic. We're a gaming space — and that's the point. Everything happens in a setting that feels warm, welcoming, and genuinely fun.

Here's how therapeutic gaming shows up in our work across Cornwall:

  • Free weekly children's club — around 45 kids supported each week across all our clubs, with all materials and models provided free.
  • School programmes — in 2025–2026 we worked with 19 schools across Cornwall, delivering 1-hour facilitated sessions for small groups.
  • Trained practitioners — our sessions are led by people with specialist training and safeguarding knowledge, not just enthusiastic volunteers.
  • All neurodivergent-friendly — no formal diagnosis required. We work from strengths, interests, and support needs.

Every session is designed to feel like a game club, not a therapy appointment — because that's exactly why it works.

Every Purchase Funds This Work

Here's the part that makes it all possible: we're a non-profit Community Interest Company, not just a shop.

Every booster pack, every box of miniatures, every board game sold at our Helston shop or online at  rollthedicecornwall.com  directly funds:

  • Free community gaming sessions
  • Children's clubs and materials
  • Therapeutic gaming programmes in schools
  • Facilitator training and resources

We stock Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon TCG, Disney Lorcana, board games, and more — all priced below RRP to reduce barriers to entry. Because gaming shouldn't be a luxury, and the benefits shouldn't be reserved for those who can afford them.

Come and See for Yourself
